According to the NBA about a new competition on Tuesday, a spokesman confirmed that a proposal to create a European Basketball League was to be reviewed, after which a new team could include 10 teams.
Sports Business News website Sportsko The owners of the league will consider a plan that includes eight to 10 franchises, including four teams, who already play the Euro League in Europe’s top club competition.
The proposed league will also offer new franchises in cities like London and Paris, Sportsko, which can cost up to 500 million.
An NBA spokesman told AFP that the league would consider the issue of a European League this week, noting that a new competition with the World Basketball Governing Body, FIBA would launch a new competition.
The spokesman said, “At this week’s NBA Board of Governors, the league will report about a new men’s search for a new basketball league in Europe in partnership with the FIBA.”
Rumors from NBA, who have played a major role in European basketball, have wandered for months, deputy commissioner Mark Tattum said last October there was a “unused opportunity” to increase the game in the region.
“There is no doubt that I think there is a chance to continue in Europe for basketball games,” Tatam said on a conference call.
“And, you know, what we focus on is working with the FIBA and our partners in Europe to get this unused opportunity to further enhance basketball games.”
Tatum noted that despite the popularity of basketball in Europe, the game “had less than one percent of the trading market.”
“So we just think that there is an opportunity to keep a better model for European basketball,” said Tatum.
Sports reported that no formal vote was scheduled for the European League proposal during this week’s meetings in New York, but team owners could nevertheless vote on the “at any time”.
Sporteko reports that the proposal is being considered, NBA will sell permanent franchise slots to foreign investors, such as independent wealth funds, private capital, wealthy people or current European basketball club.
